Frequently Asked Questions

  • The process is actually really fun and collaborative between us! The artwork goes through a few stages, the first is sketching, which is intentionally kept abstract and loose for repainting quickly and iteratively and allows you to highlight anything you would like changed, are not 100% happy with or even if you think things would look better a different way. This can result in a quickfire email back-and-forth where we can both discuss why any changes would (or in some cases would not work), and sketching new layouts until you are 100% satisfied with the layout and overall idea of the commission and are completely happy going forward.

Once you are happy for the commission to be painted exactly as we agree on, then the painting properly gets started! For cartoon work this includes inking the outlines, then finally painting the colour. For digital work I tend to work on greyscale first and once the lighting and overall detail is added the colour is added last. Traditional paintings are created similar to digital, but in smaller and slower stages to allow the paint to dry between layers.

Once the commission is inked/painted and signed if requested, a low resolution digital image or photo of the artwork will be sent to you for Final approval. Based on the medium there can be a discussion on slight changes added or colours, etc though in the most cases with Ink and Watercolour there can be very little changed without ruining the entire commission. This is why the Initial approval stage in the sketching process is so important to get right.

Major changes can be discussed, but almost always result in having to start the commission completely from scratch again, which will require an additional fee due to almost exactly doubling the studio time at this stage.

Once Final approval has been agreed, the final payment will be required and the full address for delivery requested. Digital commissions are uploaded in full resolution to a secure and private online server and a download link will be emailed.

  • All my commissions start with free consultation emails so we can find out exactly what can be done for you. I have advised previous clients with no idea what they want with my own ideas, and discussed ways to improve existing commission ideas with better layouts, different colour schemes and additions.

I am always happy to chat and help you find a good work of art for your home. Clients have even taken pictures of areas of their house they want to hang up their new artwork so we can suit the colour to fit their homes and furniture!

  • If you have an image in you head of exactly what you would like your commissioned artwork to contain please give me as detailed an idea as you can, including what you would like in the scene or background. Please include links to any pictures or other examples that may help. Don't be scared to doodle on paper or on your phone or tablet what you want, even if you can only draw stick figures! I can work with this to create something amazing for you.

  • Payment is usually recommended through Paypal with their buyer and seller protection guarantee. International Bank transfer is also available, with a slight additional fee of around 10-20$ for currency conversion and processing fees.

50% of the agreed final price will be required as deposit to start the commission process.

The remaining 50% will be required once the commission is completed to your satisfaction.

Once we have discussed the pricing and the details of the commission and you are happy going ahead you will receive via email an industry standard contract containing all the details on payments, the specifics of the artwork creation, completion date and delivery, with a money back guarantee if you are unsatisfied.

  • It's important to consider the size you would like the artwork to be, or where you intend on hanging the final artwork when considering framing sizes.

I recommend the following popular sizes -

    8 x 10 inch

    11 x 14 inch

    16 x 20 inch

Included will be a border of at least a 5 millimeters to at most 1 inch surrounding each side of the artwork to allow framing options without covering the artwork. This results in a slightly bigger size of paper which will fit frame sizes and mat openings that you can find at most arts and craft stores.

If you have a your own custom size in mind I will be more than happy discussing this with you through email.

  • For **physical artwork** on paper or watercolour card, your artwork is rolled in a cardboard tube to ensure worldwide delivery with no damages. I ship packages with international tracking and signature required on arrival costing from just 29$ USD

For **digital artwork**, you receive a link to my secure server to download a full resolution printable file in .PNG format with colour Profile : sRGB1998

If you are using another company for the printers please go with the file specifications they recommend. Every printer can use different settings so please feel free to contact me again and I will be happy to generate a custom file type or colour profile.

  • Most commissions take between 1-4 weeks depending on the medium and complexity of the art piece. For physical artwork international delivery is usually 1-2 weeks to account for shipping and customs delays. A tracking number is provided once posted so you know exactly when it will arrive!

Oil paint on canvas is an exception which can take between 3-12 months to allow drying of paint layers and a thorough final drying before delivery can be safely organised.

  • I usually have a fluctuating queue of commissions and in the run up to holidays I can be fully booked, so if you have an important date you need your commission delivered for it is highly recommended to reserve a slot in advance via a 10% deposit to avoid disappointment.

If you have an important date you need this commission completed by please send me an email now to see if I can fit you in as a priority.

  • If you have a hard limit on budget please still feel free to contact me, I love creating art and would always look for an opportunity to tailor the quote or offer suggestions to hit this price point for you.

Different sizes or styles can change the quoted price so I am always available to discuss this further and find a way to get you an artwork that you'll love!

  • Upon receipt of the final print the client is authorized to print and make use of the artwork for any non-commercial display purposes. Ownership of the copyright as well as the right to use the artwork for promotional purposes remains with the artist. If you would like to discuss a commercial commission (album cover, advertising etc) please email me for business pricing.

  • This is a collaborative process. I dont just take your request and email you weeks later with a final artwork and expect you to be happy with it! From the first sketch you will be able to have input and help mould the artwork into what you imagine it to be.

  • This is called ‘spec work’ and is something the entire art industry is against.

I wrote a well received post on an online artist community forum educating professional and amateur artists about why this is not tolerated. Please visit https://www.nospec.com for more info

  • No thank you. I can be contacted for work benefiting a registered charity though.

  • If youre ready to get started there are a few more things to be aware of below, and please [click here when you are ready to order!

Final things to be aware of before ordering -

    Subjects

The amount of subjects in the artwork will increase the final quoted price from the advertised base price. Prices advertised are for a single subject with a simple background. This quote is calculated from the amount of extra hours needed working on composition and detailing. This can be discussed in more depth in emails to reach an agreement based on budget if needed.

    Background and Landscape

Please take a few moments to decide if you would like to include a background in your commission, this can be either using a combination of different reference photos or just a crazy idea you have for where your subjects could be portrayed! While a background can add to the charm a plain white or coloured background creates a classic and timeless look for your artwork. Just like the amount of subjects, the level of detail and objects requested will increase the final quoted price from the advertised base price from the amount of extra hours needed working on composition and detailing. This can be discussed in more depth in emails to reach an agreement based on budget if needed.

    Reference images

Reference pictures will need to be included for your subjects to have a correct likeness in your artwork. They are not required just now, but please consider getting these prepared in advance if you are happy with the quote and ready to go ahead with the commission.

For cartoon or stylised artwork one or two photos of each subject should be enough.

For realistic artwork a main photo of the subject(s) face is required, to be clear, in good lighting and from the same angle and facial expression as you would like in the final artwork. For example, sending a passport photo and asking for the person to be drawn from the side will more than likely cause the likeness to be off, resulting in an unsatisfying final artwork.

Its a good idea to send as many reference photos as you feel you can. The easiest way to upload all these photos is to arrange them together on your computer and upload them all in the one go to http://imgur.com You can also use Dropbox or Google drive or any other file sharing process you are comfortable with.

I can work from individual reference photos and combine these all into a single family portrait, the only tricky part of this is making sure everyone is the right height, so if you can help me out as much as you can with getting this through multiple photos or any other way you can imagine that would be a real help. Also please take a note of every subjects eye colour and hair colours too (sometimes its hard to tell from the photos!!
